It’s almost May – and that means there is plenty going on around us to get involved with!
1st May – Run in the Park
This is the 5k run in Simmons Park (with single lap 2.5k option available) on the first Sunday of the month. April saw good weather and the largest turnout yet so we are hoping this can continue. There are runners of all abilities taking part – all are welcome! Registration is from 9:00am at the Pavilion to start at 9:30am. Adults are £1, kids are free!
1st May – Bere Pen 10k
This is 3 miles down… then 3 miles back up from Bere Alston and passes along the River Tamar. There is a wild west theme this year so if you wanted an excuse to dress up here it is! There will be cakes on offer and from past experience these are well sought after the run!
6th May – Awards Evening
This years awards evening is being held at Okehampton Golf Club at 7:30pm. This is a very popular club event and a great way to spend an evening! The cost is £11.95 per head for a cold meat and salad buffet together with dessert. The deadline is gone for food but if you would still like to come please get in touch with Keri Quertier.
15th May – Bideford 10k
This is a fast, mostly flat run along the road to Instow and back to Bideford along the Tarka trail. A perfect race for those looking to do their first 10k and for those aiming for a new PB! This race usually sees a large ORC presence so if you are worried about going alone there’s a good chance there is someone you could go with. At the time of writing there are 20+ ORCs signed up and entries are still open.
15th May – Exeter Marathon
This is a local marathon which consists of 3 laps with the option of doing 1 or 2 laps if you are not looking to go quite as far. The route is described as pancake flat and traffic tree so it could be one for you if you are after PB.
15th May – Imerys Half Marathon and Marathon
15th May is a busy day for racers! This route is mostly off road and quite challenging but very scenic – definitely one to do at least once.
5th June – Run in the Park
The 5k run in Simmons Park (as above on 1st May) makes it’s first appearance in June.
12th June – Ruby Run
This is the half marathon distance between Hatherleigh and Holsworthy which runs the opposite way each year and is one of very few point to point local races. This year is the slightly faster Holsworthy to Hatherleigh and can be completed as a walker, individual runner or as a team. Like the Bideford runs this race also attracts a large ORC presence so it would be great to see you there!
There is plenty more going on in May, June and beyond – remember to give the club calendar a look if you are after inspiration.
ORC Summer Series
Looking ahead the club’s very own summer series isn’t far off and begins with the Cosdon Hill run on 17th July at 2:30pm. This is a part of Belstone Village Fair and has been going for many years which involves getting to the top of Cosdon Hill and back again to the fair. This is a good taster if you would like to try a run that requires some self navigation – you can’t go too far wrong as you can see where you need to get to.
For more on this run and the rest of the summer series this can be found here.
